About the bank

The National Bank of Moldova was established in 1991 and plays an important role in the country's transition to a market economy. On 29 November 1993 the national currency — the Moldovan leu — was put into circulation, followed by an anti-inflationary monetary and credit policy that stabilised the exchange rate. In 1995 Parliament adopted the Law on the National Bank of Moldova and the Law on Financial Institutions; under the former, the BNM is independent in carrying out its functions and is accountable to Parliament. Since 1998 the official leu/US dollar rate has been determined as the weighted average of interbank market rates.
